DON’T SELL YOURSELF TOO SHORT
The second half of today’s topic conundrum would then be not to sell oneself too short. Some of our greatest heroes and role models had modest or no success in their early years. Abraham Lincoln lost five major elections and failed in business twice before becoming president. Babe Ruth struck out more times than he hit a home run. Today’s sports heroes and movie stars choose to exist only on their athletic or acting ability and refuse to accept themselves as role models as evidenced by their public behavior. If you look for someone to idolize or look up to realize that sometime in your life someone will look up to you. You can’t start too early being a role model.
DON’T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY
My two speaking topics may sound like contradictions; probably because they are. However there is a basic truth of life that lies within that contradiction. That truth is that extremism in any of life’s ventures is usually unsuccessful or unappreciated. “Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously” addresses one of these extremisms. I have always found that people who take themselves too seriously are rarely taken serious by others. There are always people more intelligent, more needy, more talented, or more humble. With all that being said you can still be passionate about your topic, your ideas, or your goals. People admire and respond to passionate leaders. Rarely does anyone respond to know-all, end-all, be-all.
