FHLB Des Moines is a wholesale cooperative bank that provides low-cost short and long-term funding and community lending to more than 1,200 members. Our products and services help our members build neighborhoods and strengthen communities.

FHLB Des Moines is wholly owned by its members and receives no taxpayer funding. We give back to the community by devoting 10 percent of our net income each year to affordable housing programs. Our members include commercial banks, savings institutions, credit unions and insurance companies in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota.

We are one of twelve regional banks that make up the Federal Home Loan Bank System. The FHLB System is the largest supplier of home mortgage credit in the United States. Congress created the national network of privately owned wholesale banks in 1932 to ensure available funding for mortgages.

 

Today, as the only wholesale source of community-building funds for neighborhood banks, each FHLB fills a critical vacuum by providing liquidity for small business, community development, rural and agricultural loans in addition to its mission to provide home mortgage financing.
