2008 Missouri Community Betterment Adult Leadership Award

Outstanding leaders build outstanding communities. Able leadership provides the foundation of effective community development. Vibrant communities can point to leaders of the past; strong present leadership ensures future prosperity. Not all leaders possess the same qualities, but following are some characteristics you may find in a leader.

Concern for others Builds self-esteem and self confidence in others Empowers others Recognizes talents and skills of others Gives due credit and recognition Informed Aware of conditions, circumstances, needs, etc. Sets good example Commands respect Motivates Responsible Listens Communicates Builds consensus Willing to take leadership positions, e.g., board director, officer, chairperson, etc.

Organizes Dreams Visionary Speaks out on issues Takes a stand—even in face of opposition Cooperates Willing to take risks Admits mistakes Gets things accomplished Decisive Volunteers Serves Leads rather than dictates Delegates responsibility and authority

Recognition of these leadership qualities encourages civic participation, stimulates enthusiasm and provides inspiration. By nominating an individual for the Missouri Community Betterment Adult Leadership Award, your community is honoring and paying tribute to the nominee. This, in itself, is a great honor.

Any community or neighborhood, participating in the 2008 awards competition is eligible to submit one adult nomination. Based upon the information submitted, outstanding adult nominees will be recognized at the annual recognition luncheon. All nominees will receive a leadership certificate. Nominees from communities receiving an on-site visit will be presented with certificates at the time of the judges’ visit. All other nominees will receive their certificates by mail.

Please describe, in no more than 1,000 words (three typewritten pages, double spaced in 12-point type), why this individual was nominated. Newspaper clippings and letters of endorsement are accepted

Nominations MUST be postmarked no later than July 31, 2008. Only ONE individual from a community or neighborhood may be nominated for this award.
